Mosaic pictures always consist of one large main photo and many smaller images. The main image determines the subject and has a major influence on the finished effect, so it should be the first photo you choose. Large, clear subjects work best. You will also need at least 30 small photos to begin creating your mosaic, although using 100 or even 1,000 photos can create even more variety.
When choosing the small photos, make sure each subject is easy to recognise. On the finished mosaic, these images are only around 2 to 2.5 cm wide, so very intricate subjects may become too small to see clearly in print. Your main photo should be at least 1,000 x 1,000 pixels or larger than 1 MB, while 0.5 MB is usually sufficient for the small photos. The number of photos can also influence your choice of finished format: our smallest print is 60 x 40 cm, while selected materials are available up to 150 x 100 cm.
Once you have chosen the main image, small photos and format, you can select from several print materials: canvas, acrylic glass, poster and Alu-Dibond. When choosing the material, consider where the finished mosaic will eventually be displayed.

5 tips for a unique photo mosaic
1. Do not be afraid of colour: When the mosaic is created, the colours of the individual photos are adjusted to complement the main image. This gives the mosaic a cohesive appearance and helps the main subject stand out.
2. It does not always have to be a portrait: Many of the mosaics we create use a full-frame portrait, which is a lovely choice when the photo mosaic is intended as a gift.
